Paczki Day (pronounced as ponch-kee, punchki, poonchki, or any number of variations) is the Polish celebration of the day before Lent begins with Ash Wednesday.Traditionally, on this day, families would use up all their lard, sugar, and eggs to prepare for Lent, as these things could not be eaten during the traditional Lenten fast. Now, however, Paczki Day has simply evolved into a Polish-American tradition–perhaps the Polish-American tradition. It’s something like the equivalent of St. Patrick’s Day for Irish-Americans.On Paczki Day, the food of choice is paczkis themselves, doughy deep-fried pastries similar to a jelly doughnut. The pastries are filled with all sorts of fruit and creme fillings, and are usually topped by glaze, powder, or chocolate, making them a hefty indulgence.”
