You probably know how to watercolor a stamped image. Now learn how to make a stamped image look hand painted!

What we usually do is stamp in a black, waterproof ink and then color with markers, chalk, or watercolor with ink or watercolor pencils with a pretty stamped image outlined in black. Very pretty.

I’m going to show you how to make a stamped image look hand painted by getting rid of the black outline.

You need to start with a light ink. In the picture above, I stamped the Sweetbriar Rose Stamp on Watercolor Paper with Smoky Slate Classic Stampin’ Pad inked after first stamping on scrap paper to make the soft color even softer.

My first attempt was to do as if I was coloring in a black outlined image by starting with my lightest color and color in all the petals of the rose. What happened was I lost the lines to follow for the detail of the leaves.

What you want to do instead is outline the image in your darkest color. I used my Aqua Painter and Rose Red Classic Stampin’ Pad ink to outline the petals.

Outline only one or two petals at a time or the color will dry and making it more difficult to blend with a lighter color.

Next I colored in with Pink Pirouette Classic Stampin’ Pad ink.

Continue adding more ink and blending until you are pleased. Because of the amount of water you will be using, you want to use Watercolor Paper for beautiful blending and so your paper is not warped.
