Basic Black and Basic Gray Classic Stampin' PadsSeveral of my customers were a bit confused about the Basic Black and Basic Gray Classic Stampin’ Pads being on the 2015 Stampin’ Up! Retiring List. Also because also on the list were the Neutrals Collection Classic Stampin’ Pads, Neutrals Collection Ink Refills, Basic Black Ink Refill and Basic Gray Ink Refill.

If you look really, really close at the Retiring List, you’ll see a tiny † with an explanation at the end of the long list that reads “†Coming soon; new basic black and basic gray archival inks with improved chemical formulas.”

After Stampin’ Up! reformulated the Basic Black ink with then new firm foam ink pads, there were issues of the ink drying on Whisper White and Very Vanilla Cardstock. Even after sitting for awhile, it could smear. For me, it didn’t happen all the time. But, eventually it happened too often. I then started using Black StazOn or Tuxedo Black Memento Ink Pads in my videos and listing of stamping supplies on my blog.

That explains why the Basic Black is being retired. Basic Gray must be going along for the ride of the new archival formula so both Basic ink pads (the only permanent ink in the Classic Stampin’ Pads) are the same style of ink. Sure was glad to find that tiny † and explanation because I really like having the waterproof option of softer Basic Gray.

I think what really threw most was finding the Neutrals Collection Classic Stampin’ Pads and Ink Refills on the list. Some thought it meant all the colors in the Neutrals Collection were being retired. Because Basic Black and Basic Gray are included in the Neutrals Pads Assortment and Neutrals Ink Refills Assortments, the assortments had to be retired too. They will be back with the new formulated archival ink for Basic Black and Basic Gray and a new item number.

So, the good news is two-fold. First is the other six Neutrals colors – Sahara Sand, Crumb Cake, Early Espresso, Chocolate Chip, Smoky Slate and Soft Suede – are staying and available to order.

The second is it sure sounds like we’ll have a Basic Black Classic Stampin’ Pad that will not smear on Whisper White or Very Vanilla Cardstock. I’ll be ordering both right and let you know how well they work. Fingers crossed. 🙂
